Notes:
|
Although outdoors, entry to pool is through a splash pool and channel from the changing rooms so you're always in a heated atmosphere.
Most public pools in the countries of the former Soviet Union require swimmers to have a medical certificate (spravka in Russian). Some public pools may have a doctor or a nurse on staff who can expedite the process for you; where we know this is the case and where we know a certificate is not required, we've indicated so in the lines which immediately precede this paragraph, otherwise the certificates can be obtained quickly and inexpensively at a local clinic. Most public pools are affiliated with educational institutions and have fixed length swim sessions (generally 45 minutes); you must arrive at a specified time and will be permitted to swim for only the length of the session. Bring a bathing cap, rubber or plastic sandals, and a large plastic bag to stow your gear in, as all three are commonly required to use pools in those countries.

Reviews:
|
Acceptable water quality. It can be crowded with slower swimmers but the middle lanes usually allow a reasonable workout. The pool is open to the sky but heated all year. It's spectacular to swim here in winter.

The Russian-language www.swimming.ru Web site has the beginnings of a database of
pools in that country. If you can read the language, you may find the site helpful. Many of its listings have descriptions of the pools, addresses, and telephone numbers; many others, particularly in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, do not - or at least they didn't when we discovered the site...
