Facility Notes
The McBurney YMCA opened in January, 2003.
Swim caps are absolutely, positively required - no exceptions.
They always keep three lanes open for laps: 5:30 AM, 10.30 AM to noon, and mid-afternoon are said to be the quietest times. Note, however, that, when available, drop-in admissions cannot be purchased until 8 AM.
NOTE: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, drop-in admissions were offered at $25.00; as of October, 2022, drop-in access had not been reinstated. We are hopeful that the McBurney Y will reopen for drop-in laps and we encourage swimming visitors to New York to call the Y and find out whether the situation has changed. (If you do find that they're allowing drop-ins, again, please let us know so we can update this listing. Thanks!
Facility Reviews
A nice, new pool, with a high ceiling and good ventilation - a cut above Vanderbilt and West Side.
Rating: 7 on a scale of 10. It’s busy with lots of aqua aerobics, etc.
New and clean, most swimmers are courteous (guards do NOT enforce lane etiquette). But it's way beyond busy - after work only three or four lanes are available for laps, all very crowded, with five or six swimmers per lane. Membership rates are on a par with commercial clubs.
The water was cloudy when I swam here. It was also on the warm side about 83º or 84ºF (28º or 29ºC).
When I swam in the middle of the day, the pool was relatively unbusy and the water 83ºF.
The pool is closed for kids' sessions from 3:30 to 5:30 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and there are a lot of other activities at other times that close down lanes; it gets crowded after work hours.
