Facility Reviews
I swam twice at Rantakylän during a business trip to Joensuu. First off: Gentlemen, BRING YOUR SPEEDOs. This facility doesn't allow baggy swimming trunks; men have to have wear tight fitting, brief-style swimwear. This is a very clean facility. The water, though a bit cold, is clear and I couldn't smell or taste any chlorine. The showers are great and the sauna is fantastic. I have never had a larger or nicer locker than the one I got at Rantakylän.
Lanes 1 and 2 are for "slow pokes"; lanes 3 and 4 are for clubs and swim lessons; and lanes 5 and 6 are for semi-serious to serious swimmers. My only complaint is that when I arrived at 7 PM, lanes 5 and 6 were a bit too crowded, with nine people sharing the two lanes. But the crowd quickly died off and by about 8 PM, it was just me and one or two others. They had the flags up for those who swim backstroke; just another indication that swimming here is taken pretty seriously.
All in all, it's a pretty good swimming pool, and a great swimming pool, if you can come when it's not too crowded.
