Gigantium Svømmehal

Important Notice Please Read - CLICK HERE

Swimmers Guide is not connected with any of the more than 20,000+ facilities listed on this site in any way. We cannot tell you the pools’ opening and closing times; we cannot tell you about the availability and cost of swimming lessons; we cannot help you find your children’s lost goggles or bathing suits.

We can and do try to give you reliable information about the pools, their locations, their access policies, and their single-visit or casual swimming prices. Where possible, we include email addresses and hypertext links to the pools’ own official websites, and links to the websites of the clubs and teams that swim there. Look to those resources within each listing for more detailed information.

The data in each listing is under continual review and is revised whenever the site’s editors become aware of a change but, with more than 20,000 listings, a complete, periodic review of every listing takes about three years to complete; in many places, prices will change two or three times before we have a chance to check the pool’s official website again.

For that reason, we ask for your help: If any of the information in the listing is incorrect, out of date, or could be improved, please tell us. There is an "Edit" button on just about every line of every listing, click on the edit button to tell us what needs to be changed. Please consider checking the listings of the pools you regularly use at home or when traveling, as your knowledge may be helpful to someone else who is unfamiliar with your area and visiting for the first time.

To our English users: For reasons described in the FAQ, county names shown the listings in England are the cities' and towns' historic counties, not necessarily the counties they are assigned to now.

Facility Reviews

Gigantium is, as it sounds, simply gigantic. It's a gorgeous eight-lane competition pool, striped, with targets and non-turbulent lane lines (and all of them in!). So much white tile! The website says it’s 1.8m deep at the start end, but I was standing on a ledge and it went deeper than that—whatever, it doesn’t get much better than this. The aquatic complex houses five different pool options, if you want to do more than laps: there’s a warm water/thermal pool, which is quite large, if you want to have family fun there’s a pool with water slide, plus a kiddie pool, and an infant pool, and your obligatory Danish sauna. The Gigantium complex also houses a basketball stadium, a hockey rink, a fitness center, a wellness/spa center. Everything that you would need to survive the endless cold and rain of Danish weather (not to mention four hours of daylight in winter) and not go crazy. The center is a five minute walk from the Scandic Hotel, which is SE of Aalborg proper, but it can’t be more than a five minute cab ride from city center. Great locker rooms, electronic locking lockers provided with entry fee (fees are higher on weekends/holidays). I went at about 8:45 AM on a weekday and had to split a lane for 30 minutes but then had the lane to myself and was able to click off 4200 meters in just about an hour. Lane etiquette seemed very well understood and appreciated. You buy your ticket at the small café just outside the pool entrance. There is a full activity schedule for the pools on the website, and they say that they always have at least four lanes open for laps. This is one of four pools that the Aalborg Svømmeklub uses and, from what I can tell, that is mostly in the afternoon after school. My contact with the team didn’t yield much of a result, but I don’t believe they have a Masters team, just youth/club level. [May, 2015]
