Facility Reviews
There are ten 25-yard lanes, plus a large wading area. I've used the pool on summer Saturday and Sunday mornings. My first use, on a Saturday, every lane was in use by 7:15 AM, but only one person per lane. My second use, on a Sunday, only five of the lanes were in use. Note that on both weekend days, the two deepest lanes were reserved for a SCUBA diving class 8 - 10 AM, and the shallowest lane was reserved for swim lessons.
Officially, the pool opens one hour after the club (on weekends, the club opens at 7 AM but the pool opens at 8 AM); however, no one seemed to pay attention to that, as members headed to the pool right when the facility opened. (You can tell who is a member versus public or guest access because members have towel service.)
I was cautioned that, especially because of the public access, the pool gets very crowded during peak hours, such as summer afternoons and evenings.

Update:
Recently, the FIT front desk team leader told me that the pool is owned by the City of San Diego and leased to FIT, which explains why they offer a drop-in rate for the pool only. The staffer insisted that the city contract prohibits them from letting the public swim before 8 AM.

The FIT pool is a great facility with clean water and pretty hillside views. The women's locker room for FIT members offers warm towels, a suit dryer, many products, lockers with resettable combinations (no need to bring a lock!), and a sauna. I've gone mid-day on weekdays and usually got my own lane. Kickboards, pull buoys, and paddles are available for use. Masters workouts are offered between 5:30 and 6:30 AM and noon to 1 PM every weekday. (The schedule is available HERE.)
