Important Notice Please Read

Swimmers Guide is not connected with any of the facilities listed on this site in any way. We cannot tell you the pools’ opening and closing times or when Senior Aerobics classes are held; we cannot tell you about the availability or cost of swimming lessons; we cannot get you discounted admission to swim at any of them; and we cannot help you find your children’s lost goggles or bathing suits.

We can and do try to give you reliable information about the pools, their locations, their admission policies, and their single-visit or casual swimming prices. Where possible, we include hypertext links to the pools’ own official websites and Facebook pages, clickable email addresses, and links to the websites of the clubs and teams that swim there. Look to those resources within each listing for more detailed information.

The data in the site is under continual review and is revised whenever the site’s editor becomes aware of a change, but, with more than 20,000 listings, a complete, periodic review of every listing takes about seven years to complete; in many places, prices will change four or five times before we have a chance to check the pool’s official website again.

For that reason, we ask for your help: If any of the information in the listing is incorrect, out of date, or could be improved, please tell us. There is an "Edit" button on just about every line of every listing, click on the edit button to tell us what needs to be changed. (No, it's not a place for you to ask us questions. What we have in each listing is the latest news we have.)

Also, please consider checking the listings of the pools you regularly use at home or when traveling, as your knowledge may be helpful to someone else who is unfamiliar with the area and visiting for the first time. Just go to the Add a Pool section of the site, read the first page, then fill out the questionnaire.

Facility Reviews

What a pool! This is one of the nicest facilities on the East Coast. I trained with the GSA Masters team, great people. On Wednesdays during the short-course season, the pool is set for up long course laps from 7 to 10 AM. Several school teams train from 5:30 to 7 AM (as does the Masters team), so there's very little, if any, open space. At 7 AM, however, the place clears out and lots of space available. Check the website for other restrictions and for the club teams practice schedule. Bring your own lock for the lockers. This will be a super venue for USMS Nationals in May, 2016.
[October, 2015]
As a body of water, this is one of the best pools in the country.
  1. There is a separate 25 yard pool used for instructional purposes, six lanes wide, with two of those lanes kept for lap swimming and the other four for instructional purposes, etc. With a ramp.
  2. There is a 25 yard diving well with a 10 meter tower, used for occasional water polo and sometimes for lap swim, instruction, etc. When used for lap swim they do put in lane ropes BUT there are no lines on the bottom and, given its depth, this can be deceiving.
  3. Then there is a 50 meter x 25 yard pool with two moveable bulkheads. This "competition pool" sees lots of meet action, especially on weekends.
The facility claims they will provide four lanes for public/rec swim most of the time, but far too often this may be two lanes in the diving well and two in the instructional pool.

Unlike many other pools, GAC makes no attempt to designate lanes by speed or ability so it is not uncommon to find yourself sharing a lane with rank beginner or water jogger, even on days when there are four empty lanes immediately adjacent to those offered for Public Swim. Go figure.

What is also frustrating is that many teams rents lanes for swim practice and because the GAC management does a terrible job of posting complete lane usage information, you may suddenly discover that what you thought was four lanes has now turned into two, without any warning.

I'm not sure why it is so difficult to post this sort of information both online and there at the pool each day, so you don't start swimming long course, then be told 15 minutes later that you have to move to a short course pool. There's this thing called the Internet, white boards, etc., but Public Swim takes a real backseat and, despite several administrators, no one seems capable or cares to address this situation.

They do print a monthly calendar, but it is more confusing than a train schedule in a language you don't understand. They also have a website, but some of that information is more than two years old and no one seems to update it regularly.

That said, the pools are magnificent-- if you can figure out when you can find a lane.
