Facility Notes
After having been closed for roof repairs in late 2014, the pool reopened in March, 2016.
Facility Reviews
Unbearably warm with no ventilation. Double-width lanes, circle swimming required; loose lane lines. Pool etiquette neither observed nor enforced.
Fast section swimmers generally observe pool etiquette. But guards don't enforce the swim speeds for the lanes. The best times are very early AM and very late PM, midday isn't too bad.
The pool temperature inconsistent; the facility is poorly maintained; the locker rooms are dirty; and no one enforces rules and regulations.
The pool closed after a roof collapse in late 2014. After multiple delays, the pool finally reopened in 2016 with a new ceiling and much improved ventilation and lighting (a few fixtures have never worked, however, and never been replaced). Since then, there have been repeated problems with the pump and filtration system, requiring repeated closures that have been unpredictable and can last for days to a week or more. In addition to the pool, roof, and ventilation upgrades, the men's and women's locker rooms, perpetually skanky, finally underwent a very superficial cosmetic renovation at the end of 2017. The boys' and girls' locker rooms are still to be done.
The pool has double-width lanes for circle swimming, but so many swimmers have become so frustrated with management that the prior numbers have so far never returned. Therefore, circle swimming is rarely needed. Just as well, because pool etiquette (except in fast lane) is rarely observed and certainly never enforced by inattentive lifeguards. Lifeguards worry more about swimmers' wearing swim caps than their showering before pool entry or their following swim etiquette in the lanes. Lifeguards never do anything to re-sort swimmer according to speeds, when this gets mixed up by the swimmers themselves.
The overall management of this YMCA is abysmal. Always hand-waving and excuses for everything. Custodial cleaning is poorly supervised, if at all; and even the "renovated" locker rooms are already showing decline from poor maintenance and cleaning.
I have had a membership here since 1994 or 1995, but The ONLY reason for using this Y's pool is its geographic convenience. On a more positive note, they do seem to have resurrected a solid kids' swim team program ("Sailfish").
