Velachery Aquatic Complex

Important Notice Please Read

Swimmers Guide is not connected with any of the facilities listed on this site in any way. We cannot tell you the pools’ opening and closing times or when Senior Aerobics classes are held; we cannot tell you about the availability or cost of swimming lessons; we cannot get you discounted admission to swim at any of them; and we cannot help you find your children’s lost goggles or bathing suits.

We can and do try to give you reliable information about the pools, their locations, their admission policies, and their single-visit or casual swimming prices. Where possible, we include hypertext links to the pools’ own official websites and Facebook pages, clickable email addresses, and links to the websites of the clubs and teams that swim there. Look to those resources within each listing for more detailed information.

The data in the site is under continual review and is revised whenever the site’s editor becomes aware of a change, but, with more than 20,000 listings, a complete, periodic review of every listing takes about seven years to complete; in many places, prices will change four or five times before we have a chance to check the pool’s official website again.

For that reason, we ask for your help: If any of the information in the listing is incorrect, out of date, or could be improved, please tell us. There is an "Edit" button on just about every line of every listing, click on the edit button to tell us what needs to be changed. (No, it's not a place for you to ask us questions. What we have in each listing is the latest news we have.)

Also, please consider checking the listings of the pools you regularly use at home or when traveling, as your knowledge may be helpful to someone else who is unfamiliar with the area and visiting for the first time. Just go to the Add a Pool section of the site, read the first page, then fill out the questionnaire.

Facility Notes

The complex was purpose-built for the 1995 South Asian Games and is maintained by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDATS). It includes a fitness centre (with separate admission and membership rates.)
Although we don't have precise water temperatures for the pools, we are informed that the "warm up" pool is considerably cooler than the main pool. And the diving pool is used only for coach-supervised activities.
There are certain times reserved for women, when men are not allowed (however, the local maintenance guys do hover around…)
In April, 2013, we were informed that the club is no longer open to the public, unless a membership is purchased. Then, in April, 2015, someone sent us the single-swim admission price shown above. If you're thinking of dropping in, a telephone call in advance of your visit would seem to make a lot of sense...
NOTE: We receive requests for information about signing up for membership or enrollment in swimming instructions at this pool almost every day. As we are not connected with the pool in any way, we are not in a position to respond on behalf of the pool or its management. Please refer to the "Important Notice - Please Read" link above the "Facility Overview" section of this (and every other listing details) page. Three telephone numbers have been provided, above; we respectfully request that interested parties use them.
"Pool 3", above, is located under the viewing stands for the 50 meter pool and cannot be seen in the aerial photographs - but it is there.

Facility Reviews

Yikes! I went to this pool 2 weeks ago. The water was scary murky. I don't recommend it except for the most hardy of swimmers. I didn't dare put my head in the water, and I've never felt that way before.
I visited it today and found it tolerably clean.
[May, 2009]
My colleagues and I joined the swimming classes at aquatic club last month. The coaches are very good and helpful. We were able to float, swim crawl and back stroke, and dive from 3m board and the 5m platform in a span of 12 days. It’s a good place to learn!
[April, 2013]
I recently participated in a 12-day swimming course at the complex and have mixed reviews about this place. The pool is maintained with high levels of chlorine, so make sure you carry goggles and caps.
--The 50m pool [Pool 1] is heated and the water is definitely far better than the warm-up pool. Its only downside is that it might get a bit crowded, sometimes.
--The warm-up pool [Pool 2] isn't heated, feels cold in the morning, and the water is poorly maintained. There are unscrewed plates underwater and a shaky pool ladder.
--The diving pool [Pool 3] is also heated and water feels the best here, perhaps because not many use it. The pool tiles definitely need some upkeep.
--The dressing room is OK. There are no latches in the changing booths. The lockers don't come with locks, so take one if you are worried about your belongings. The showers work intermittently, but still do the job.
[June, 2013]
The water could be maintained better and staff could do a better job enforcing the rules for showering and spitting.
[October, 2013]
The showers are not working properly; and the maintanenace of the bath room and dressing rooms is poor.
[April, 2014]
The actual Total Dissolved Solids in the main pool is more than double the recommended 1,500 ppm, so the water is always turbid.
The actual pH value is 6.8, whereas it should be between 7.3 and 7.7.
There is a bit of foul smell, too, indicating staleness and the probable presence of bacteria and harmful microbes beyond the permissible limit.
Pool chlorination is performed improperly, with a daily top-off, but without a partial draining being done, first.
The maintenance equipment does not seem to be in proper, working condition.
