Facility Notes
There is also a 50-meter, 8 lane, unheated, outdoor swimming pool at this location; it is open from early May to the end of August. At opening the water is about 20ºC (68ºF) and doesn't reach 28ºC (82º F), until July. When the outdoor pool is open, the indoor pool is closed.
There is a second 50-meter, outdoor pool here, but it appears shallow in the photographs, has one (long) wall that is irregularly shaped, and is referred to in the facility's site as "non-swimmers' pool".
Be sure to check the indoor pool's schedule on its website; whenever we've looked at it, the hours for public access have been very limited.
Facility Reviews
An expensive modernisation of both the indoor and outdoor pools was completed in 2015. The indoor 50m pool is tiled and has a movable wall in the middle that can occasionally split a few lanes into 25m sections.
While there is no designated fast lane, I have found that there is usually enough space for sportive swimming, and that the lifeguards allow the use of paddles, snorkel, etc., as long as the pool is not too full, which rarely happens. There is also a second, shallow, non-swimmers pool indoors used for training, and a third pool used only for the diving board.
The showers and clothing rooms are modern and clean. The changing cubicles on the side of the outdoor pool are in bad shape and could use some care. Everything else appears well maintained.
The outdoor pool is heated only by a solar installation on the roof of the indoor pool, one of the few pools in Berlin with this feature. This means that a pleasant swimming temperature of 27º/28ºC. (81º/82ºF.) is not reached until June or July, and usually cannot be maintained by the beginning of September. In early May, the water temperature is usually not much more than 20ºC.
The outdoor pool never has lane lines anymore, unfortunately, not even a single one, which makes lap swimming difficult and even outright dangerous. On a day with nice weather, it is impossible to swim even one length without having to evade other people. It is really a pity that they do not even put one lane line in this pool, especially since most other outdoor pools have much colder water, once this one is properly heated up.
The best time to come to swim laps in the outdoor pool here is in July-August on a day with bad weather, right after a few days with good weather - then the water will still be pleasantly warm, while there will be almost no other swimmers.
The 50m outdoor pool also has a diving well with 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards. The other outdoor pool is a shallow, non-swimmers pool with a slide, it is intended for playing. There is also a huge grass area for sunbathing and playing.
